Where Did Your Anatomy Class Skeleton Come From...?

Up until 1985 every skeleton in medical institutions around the world came from India.

Today’s story is one of those stories that you totally had no idea about and it makes you wonder how many more stories like these exist out in the world. I have filed this story under the category of: ‘damn this was happening right under my nose and I had no clue’.

Warning: this story is a bit grim. It leans true crime with some morbid details.

While you decide if you want to continue this story or not, I have an exciting announcement! We are dropping our MH370 New Evidence Deep Dive on our YouTube channel TOMORROW. We’ve compiled all the top questions about MH370 and had key MH370 aviation investigators, Richard Godfrey and Jean-Luc Marchand, answer them. It is VERY good. So make sure you’re subscribed to the YouTube channel here: Today I Learned Science YouTube

Now onto the story:

Remember those skeletons you would see in anatomy classes that hang out in the corner and are used to study the human body?

Well, up until the 1980s, all those skeletons that medical students around the world relied on to become trained doctors, came from India.

What most people didn’t realize was that the vast majority of these skeletons were stolen from graves in Calcutta, India.
