Every month at the end of the month, I’ll be sharing my current cravings. The shows, foods, books and anything else I was really loving and think you would too!
1. BODKIN (TV show) - Netflix
My goodness. What. a. SHOW. This show has been described as ‘Murders in the Building’ set in Ireland. I’d go one step away from that and say it’s like Broadchurch meets Bad Sisters. In a word, the show follows an Irish investigative journalist who is forced to team up with an American true crime podcaster to investigate a decades old mystery in a tiny Irish village called Bodkin. Three people disappeared on Samhain 20 years ago and, true to any small village, everyone knows a piece of the story, but no one wants to talk. 10/10 for me - it was moody, dark with many twists turns, but full of good, dry Irish humor.
2. Candace Pert: Genius, Greed and Madness in the World of Science by Pamela Ryckman (Book)
The highlight of my Substack article last week - The Most Important Female Scientist You’ve Never Heard Of. Ryckman’s biography of Dr. Candace Pert reads like a cinematic drama. It is absolutely unfathomable to me how Dr. Pert is not a household name, but I have a feeling she soon will be, just like how we’ve come to know Dr. Rosalind Franklin. Ryckman was a former NYT journalist and that in depth level of research and rich writing comes through beautifully. She really earned the trust of Dr. Pert’s family and Pert’s colleagues, who are now in their 70s and 80s, all spoke to Ryckman with a level of candidness that only comes when they have nothing left to lose. As a result, Ryckman was able to capture a raw depiction of the ruthlessness of the scientific world.
3. Beauty by Joseon Sunscreen
I just posted about this on my Instagram, but with summer coming around the corner we need proper sunscreen and the US doesn’t allow a KEY ingredient found in sunscreens in Asia, Europe and South America that effectively blocks UVA and UVB. Since living in Malaysia for the past 1.5 years, I’ve fully embraced trying out all Asian products and I’m never going back. I’ve been using the Korean brand Beauty by Joseon and I love it.
